The "Who Cares That Winter is Two Days Away" Dress

I needed to take a break from sewing heavy, woolen, dark colored cold weather stuff.  I had this fabric in my stash along with Simplicity 2246.  The material is oh so wrong for December- it's a breezy woven cotton.  (True confession: It's an inexpensive quilter's cotton AND it's from Wal-M*rt- roll your eyes now in disapproval- but you know you have some of the same sorta thing in your stash). 

I've made the shirt dress from this pattern a little over a year ago.  It ended up just okay because it was too large... then I lost more weight so it's pretty huge now and I'm too lazy to alter it because I'm not too thrilled by the fabric.

This was an easy pattern to sew up.  I used my serger to finish seams since it's a cotton.  Both views in this pattern are sweet and casual everyday garments.  I made a straight 14 despite the envelope recommending a combo of 18 and 20 for me.  The ease in Simplicity patterns is MASSIVE!

The skirt seemed too long so I shortened the hemline by 2".  I didn't use the button guide when making my buttonholes and only used 8 instead of 10 as the pattern says to. So now the fabric puckers between the buttons when I bend a certain way.  I might need to secretly sew a snap in there as to not give a free show to the world.  You can see the gap in some of the photos!  How un-lady like.

This dress fits so well and I LOVE the print.  I like that the buttons don't match (but no one would know that but me) because I have a bajillion unmatched vintage buttons.  The collar is nice buttoned or undone.  Perhaps I will try to sew this one up with long sleeves or with a more cold-weather-appropriate fabric.  By golly, I will manage to wear it this winter with some strategic layering.
